Re-set and move on
The pandemic opened up a role for Wendy Kehoe at GSK she’d worked toward for years, without ever knowing it

Every so often, life circumstances force you into re-set mode. Whether brought on by a new world of opportunities opening up, an economic recession, or a crisis in confidence, sometimes it’s time to hit the pause button.
That cycle is one MU alumna Wendy Kehoe encountered after her first year at Maynooth and at times throughout a career that landed her where she is today: Global Marketing Director for Covid Vaccine Solutions at pharmaceutical giant GSK.
During secondary school in Harold’s Cross in Dublin, Wendy knew after a double period of science she had found her future career path. “I remember thinking to myself: ‘This is always what I wanted to do.’”
But once at Maynooth, not only did a world of possibilities open up, she struggled with the independence. “I wasn’t the best student. At University, you were in charge of your own destiny. No one was holding me to account. I was following suit how I’d approached secondary, but no one was watching anymore.”
Wendy dropped out of MU to re-group and returned a year later. She made many great friends and started down a path that would prove consequential for her career. It started through part-time work at a market research call center in Dublin with a number of other MU students.
After graduating in 2000, a job in the company’s statistics department opened up and Wendy moved into data analysis and writing code.
She met fellow Maynooth grad (and current MU Foundation Board member) Bernie Coyne, who ultimately recruited Wendy to a new market research firm she was setting up, Research Solutions. It was then Wendy found scope for her career to grow and evolve, eventually becoming a director, managing big clients such as RTÉ, Heineken, and ESRI through the dynamic Celtic Tiger years.
The firm’s success culminated with an acquisition by Amárach Research. Then, London called. Wendy landed a job as Commercial Analyst at GSK in a global product role.
Yet, just as she was settling into her new life, GSK went through a massive restructure. Fear initially took hold, but only momentarily, as Wendy transitioned into a customer insights director role. She went on to support the launch of marketing campaigns for a new Respiratory medicine via customer insight testing and input. And In 2017, she became a Global Marketing Director, where she worked with a global launch team designing and setting strategy for respiratory medicine in US, Europe and Japan.
Wendy is motivated by the challenge of working at the interface of the medical and marketing sides of the business. “There is nothing more important to me than patient health, so one of the more interesting parts of job is working in this highly regulated area; how you do you market a licenced product in a fair and balanced way so that it gets to the appropriate patient where it can do a lot of good?”
Last summer, the pandemic presented Wendy with a new opportunity. Today, she is helping to shape and determine GSK’s vaccine development plans. “It’s a very different challenge to what I’ve done before: help the business make good investment decisions that will advance vaccines with the greatest potential to impact public health to the next stages.
This pandemic has challenged pharmaceutical companies to pivot. It’s been more dynamic than anything we’ve seen. All parties found efficient paths to get vaccine to patients in a speedier way to address the huge public health need. It’s pushed the pharma industry to innovate, and it will be interesting to see the implications on everything else we have to face into the future. I look forwards to seeing that!”
Celebrating 40 Years of Social Justice, Policy, and Professions at MU
On November 11th, alumni, friends, and former staff were invited to campus for a wonderful afternoon and evening, which in the words of the head of the Department of Applied Social Studies, Dr Seamus Taylor was all about “reminiscing, reconnecting and renewal.” Among the attendees was Senator Eileen Flynn (2017 BA – Community & Youth Work) who spoke warmly and enthusiastically about her Maynooth experience. To her right is 2013 alumnus, Ray Burke, Director of Policy and Advocacy, Pieta House.
Irish Universities reflect on 50 years of EU membership
Membership of the European Union has had a transformative effect on the Irish higher education sector, attendees of an Irish Universities Association gathering heard on 6th September. The Iveagh House event served as a celebration to mark 50 years of Ireland’s membership of the EU and reflect on the myriad benefits of the alliance on educational attainment, research breakthroughs and intercultural exchange.
